"I used to think sunshine was a bit frivolous -- now I know it is life." - Jeanette Winterson
I used to think Independence Day was something to celebrate. I also used to think that our democratic "freedoms" were actually, you know, freedoms. Yet, instead of getting all wrapped up in the many countries who don't have true independence (including our own) & instead of pretending that our own independence is, you know, without its issues, I will choose to look at the glass half full. For today.
I, too, used to think sunshine was for less serious minds. The frivolous. Those who are not knee deep in "what the hell is my character going to do now" negotiations. Those who are less concerned about the author reading tomorrow and the books stacked by the bed unread and are more concerned with tanning and bathing suits and, well, less serious pursuits such as reading US Weekly and hunting down the exact Chloe slacks Kate Moss was wearing in the latest issue.
But. On this Independence Day, I choose to let it all go. I will have some drinks, I will have grilled meat of some sort, I will soak up a bit of sun and I will say it is good. The sun is life after all, right? If Jeanette Winterson said it, it must be so.
Cheers on this day, however you to choose to celebrate it. Or, you know, not.
