The rhythmic quality of this sentence alone is what I love most about Winslow's writing and there are gems like this all over Savages. Of course, it doesn't hurt that I'm a NoCal girl living in a SoCal world and so I know that Winslow has nailed the sun/not fog, light/not heavy, different country vibe. I'm fog though so clearly I have some of my own NoCal/SoCal issues to address.
